This surprised the heck out of us. We'd always been told Mexico was a macho society, ruled aggressively by overbearing men. We found instead a clearly matriarchal society, where the men (even when acting aggressively) are hugely subservient to the women, sometimes to the point of emotional timidness. The women could be intimidating (we never crossed the lady who cleaned our casa) but they were strong in preserving their communities. I love that you pointed this out in your piece.
